Hello, my name is Dirk Dallas.

I'm a graphic designer & soon to be daddy. This is where I toss all the things that inspire me from the Internets. Enjoy.

Flowing Organic Pieces

Yesterday Jonna sent me a link to these super cool images of varnish flowing in a bowl of water (see below the video). At first I was thinking they were 3D, but I discovered they were actually shot on a Canon Rebel. Pretty impressive.

So it's a coincidence that today I came across this video that seems similar to the varnish images but in motion (yes this is 3d). This piece below is titled 'Nokta', which is an abstract film about organic pieces.

More images here.

Dan Meyer's 2009 Annual Report

Dan Meyer had a really clever, yet very time consuming idea. He spent 2009 documenting lots of data from his daily life. Recording everything from how many hours of music he listened to, how many miles he drove, how many books/pages he read, to even how much sleep he got on weekends. Dan then compiled all the info and created an animated statistics video showing all the stats. I'm thinking it would be fun do to something like this for my baby girl's first year… ya, if there will even be time to! ;)

More info about the project here.

'Sherlock Holmes' End Title Sequence

Wow._The_Sherlock_Holmes_end_t.zip (602 KB)

Looks like Guy Richie went back to the guys over at Prologue Films (one of my favorite mograph studios) to do the end title sequence for his newest movie Sherlock Holmes. Make sure to watch it. I love the live action ink reveals, the textures & parchments, and of course the typography. You can view the end titles here

UPDATE – 01/20/2010

Make sure you check out this new and fantastic interview/behind the scenes look, with Prologue on this title sequence. Check it out here.

You should follow me on Twitter here.

NA#

This video has two of my favorite things combined: Animation & footage from the Canon 7D. This was shot at 60fps, with a 50mm, 60mm, and a 300mm, over 2 days as a class project before a group of friends graduated. Check out the full break down here

The Motion Graphics Workflow of The New York Times

Basically The New York Times' workflow starts with a conversation. During that conversation their aim is to answer the following questions:

  • Do we need motiongraphics?
  • Is the concept we’re trying to communicate visually complex?
  • Can we tell or illustrate this part of the story just as well with video or photography?
  • Do we have time to do it?

Read more about their process here.

Behind the Scenes: T.Rowe Price "Ink"

Really interesting behind the scene piece from PSYOP's commercial: T.Rowe Price "Ink". They show us the very beginning of their process from sketches, to style-boards, to previs, to animation progress, to the final spot.

Final spot:
